MARCIA HARRIS - Satement

The body of work titled: 'Landscape Awareness" is inspired by an interest in the effects of global warming. I have always had an affinity for trees, so it seemed like a natural progression to use the topic of "The Mountain Pine Beetle" in my next series. It's redeeming to still see beauty in the devastation of nature, and this is what compels me to paint these images, even though I find it a disturbing reality. While researching the effects of the Mountain Pine Beetle I have had the opportunity of hearing some first hand stories that are often heartbreaking. I have also been supplied with many wonderful images from forestry photographers who are more than happy to contribute.   I feel that 'landscape' has taken on a new face and we need to be aware of its fragile nature and how it's changing.

The medium and technique that I am using with this series lends well to the subject matter of my work. I am using resin to cover the work as an aesthetic, but also because it is the pine tree's method of defense against the beetle. I have also used a carving tool (making marks into the actual wood surface of the painting) to imitate the beetle marks underneath the bark. I have used the marks to interrupt a picturesque landscape in order to emphasize the "larger than life" reality.

The infestation of the Mountain Pine Beetle is an issue that has mainly affected areas in Northern B.C., however in the last few years it has escalated due to warmer winters and shorter freezing periods. Now even areas in Alberta are being affected. It will inevitably become a National Issue.
