Jakub Dolejs

A 1998 MFA graduate from the Academy of Art & Architecture in Prague, the now Toronto-based Dolejs creates large-format photographs that immediately insist upon the viewer’s active participation. As a viewer we are compelled to decode the sometimes off-putting staged spaces in his work. Playing off constructed space against real space, Dolejs tests the medium’s ability to influence our understanding of our own personal environments.

Dolejs is considered to be one of the most exciting young photographers in Canada, and has been curated into many significant exhibitions across Canada, the United States and Europe. He showed at the Montreal's Mois de la Photo in 2005. In the Spring 2006, Dolejs completed an artist residency in Paris funded by the Canada Council for the Arts. His work is included in a major survey of staged photography at the National Gallery of Canada entitled Acting the Part: Photography as Theatre.
