MATT CROOKSHANK - Artist Statement

Growing up cross-eyed, I’ve always seen things from two physical perspectives. I can consciously switch which eye I focus from, and in doing so, I can slightly alter my view-point from any one position. I do this regularly in my life, generally depending on which eye is closer to the object I’m viewing, continually changing the parallax of my perspective.

I have come to the conclusion that I am between these two perspectives, floating between my fields of vision. It is from this hovering space that I create an abstract narration of my potential existence, invoking the breath between sentences, the unspoken periods, the indent. I adventure to describe this potential on all levels, its biology, its anxiety and its illusions. My work is an exploration of the place where ideas meet and tangle to form new beasts, new nightmares, new beautiful collapses and pleasurable failures. Like the dreams that disappear before we wake up, I strive to create enigmas that challenge perception and defy deconstruction.
